You Are What You Eat

In simpler terms, a calorie is used as a measure of the energy released by food as it is digested by the human body. The First Law of Thermodynamics (Conservation) states that energy is always conserved, it cannot be created or destroyed. In essence, energy can be converted from one form into another.

Now, I’m not going to get into the role of carbs, fats, and proteins because I’m not a dietitian but this is my take on it. We all know that 3500 calories = 1 pound of fat. When you consume less calories and workout your body is in a negative energy balance because the exercise outweighs the calorie intake so this helps you to lose weight. When you consume more than you burn you’re in a positive energy balance and this causes you to gain weight overtime.

The reason I’m talking about this is because I also think of energy as emotions. When you like someone you like their energy right? You get a good vibe from them. So shouldn’t the same emotions go towards the foods we eat?

Yesterday I finally had a day of healthy eating AND I even got in a workout. I felt good and I felt like my energy levels had gone up. I thought back to the foods I was consuming last week: Chipotle, pizza, burgers and fries, the list goes on… When I ate these foods, even though I was trying to fill an emotional void, I still felt sluggish after I ate which only lead me to craving more of the those foods. They say sugar affects the same cell receptors as cocaine which is why sugar is so addicting. I was craving the high only to have a crash once the food digested.

Have you ever ate a meal and were immediately thrown into a food coma afterwards? Brain fog, ready for nap, scrolling through Netflix? Yep, same.

So are we really what we eat?

I know that when I’m drinking my green shake in the morning I am starting the day off on the right foot. I’m consuming healthy nutrients my body needs to operate at it’s highest level. Sure, I could start the day with a donut but I know that the sugar I’m consuming will give me a spike in insulin for a short period of time before it wears off and then I’m irritable and craving more. Think of it like a shot of adrenaline, it’s a temporary fix. Likewise, if you are constantly eating unhealthy meals and not balancing it with exercise your body gets all out of wack and so do your emotions. Again, not to be technical but our bodies don’t know how to process artificial sweeteners and processed foods.

I think the reason we see people on social media who are eating burgers and fries yet are fit is because they balance it well. I know that if I can get back on track (and stay there God willing) then I’ll be able to incorporate a “cheat” meal here and there as long as I workout to balance out the energy.

The next time you sit down for a meal ask yourself, “How is this going to make me feel?” I’m not just talking emotionally (we’ve all gone back to the ex that did us wrong). I’m talking about what kind of energy do we want to have.
